Ghagra cholis are now not only an acceptable attire for formal occasions, they are actually considered the modern fashionable dress for such functions. Ghagra cholis are worn by Indian women for even their weddings. Chunris worn along with gagra cholis worn on formal occasions such as weddings are worn as tradition indicates on top of the head; however on non wedding occasions the chunri is usually worn over the shoulder from the front to the back or around the neck to give a scarf like appearance.

Besides weddings, ghagra cholis have made their appearances in other occasions such as upanayanams, navratri, wedding receptions, house warming formal functions called griha praveshams and the like.
