Ghagra cholis are now not only an acceptable attire for formal occasions, they are actually considered the modern fashionable dress for such functions. Ghagra cholis are worn by Indian women for even their weddings. Whereas in yesteryears, it was the saree that was the only costume for weddings, nowadays stores specialize in fancy ghagra cholis for weddings and betrothals.

Of course the ghagra choli designed for weddings is highly ornate with elaborate bead work, sophisticated painstaking embroidery and many of them tailored to order for the perfect fit and form for the ceremonious occasion at hand.

When designing for weddings, the perfect color combination needs to be considered, taking into effect the natural skin color matching of the bride, hair color, preference of fabric, heaviness of the dress, ease of flow or rigidity of the dress as well as tightness or looseness of the top. Most off the shelf dresses cannot be used without some sort of tailoring and alteration and usually the retailer of the dress usually has tailors on the premises.

Chunris worn along with gagra cholis worn on formal occasions such as weddings are worn as tradition indicates on top of the head; however on non wedding occasions the chunri is usually worn over the shoulder from the front to the back or around the neck to give a scarf like appearance.

Besides weddings, ghagra cholis have made their appearances in other occasions such as upanayanams, navratri, wedding receptions, house warming formal functions called griha praveshams and the like.
